12 MINUTES OF THE 1997 SYNOD OF THE The reports of the Presbyteries were taken up. The Presbytery of the Alleghenies reported asking that Joseph Griffo be allowed to participate in the Travel Fund. The request was granted. Following each report Synod was led in prayer for that presbytery as follows: Roger Adams for the Presbytery of the Alleghenies; Doug Comin for Atlantic Presbytery; Dennis Prutow for Great - Lakes Gulf Presbytery; Jim Pennington for Midwest Presbytery; Arthur Fawthrop for Pacific Coast Presbytery; Sidney Van Camp for St. Lawrence Presbytery, and; Paul McCracken for the Japan Presbytery. Synod took a fifteen-minute recess at 3:00 p.m. Shigeru Takiura presented a special petition from the Japan Presbytery which was received during the Saturday evening session as Communication 97-10. Rev. Wesley Brice, pastor of the Northland Reformed Church was introduced to the court as the fraternal delegate from the Reformed Church in the United States. The reports of the Presbyteries were received and are as follows: REPORT OF THE PRESBYTERY OF THE ALLEGHENIES Dear Fathers and Brothers, The Presbytery of the Alleghenies gives thanks to our Gracious God for His many mercies. We have 14 congregations under our care. All congregations are settled with full-time pastors, with the exception of Rimersburg. We would ask the prayers of the church for their need of a settled pastor. Our congregations enjoy the blessings of the gospel being preached, the instruction of the word of God for their edification, the fellowship of the saints as well as the oversight of the eldership of regular elders. We are thankful to our Sovereign God for these His mercies. This past January (the 17th) presbytery met in Washington D.C. to organize the Anchor Fellowship as a congregation of the RPCNA. We rejoice in our God's goodness in this and ask for the prayers of the church for Pastor Peter Smith and this young congregation. Last year we asked for prayers for Anchor as well as Trinity. At our spring meeting we heard of some measure of answers to those prayers for Trinity as well. While the work isstill at a fragile stage, some new people have been attending and the presbytery's prayeris that this will continue and that others will likewise be drawn into the fellowship of the gospel there. Mr. Keith Black was installed as pastor of the First Beaver Falls Congregation on July 18th, 1996. The Bible Study in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh has progressed during the last year. Weekly Lord's Day evening worship services have been conducted since last August. Two seminarians, Joe Griffo and C. ]. Williams, have shared responsibilities with RPTS President Jerry O'Neill. There have been a number of
REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF NORTH AMERICA 13 professions of faith through Bible studies, led by Joe Griffo, which enthusiastically received. Some of those professing faith have attended the worship services. We have four men under the care of the Presbytery. Mr. Tom Gray (North Hills) and Mr. Joe Griffo (Covenant Fellowship) finished their seminary training last May. C. J. Williams (North Hills) has completed his middler year at RPTS. He joined the RPCNA as a result of attending RPTS. Mr. Joel Bagdon (North Hills) graduated from Geneva College this spring and plans to begin his seminary work in the fall. Mr. Griffo and Mr. Williams are certified to preach. Mr. Griffo anticipates being certified eligible to receive a call at this Synod's meeting of the Presbytery. The Presbytery gives thanks for these men and the gifts God has graciously given them. We pray that the Lord of the Church will guide them to suitable places of service for the glory of His name. Mr. Tom Gray is laboring in Japan under the supervision of Pastor Takiura for the summer 1997. Our "retired" pastors continue to serve the Lord and His church. Serving as Interim Moderators, Commission and Committee members as well as supplying many pulpits in our congregations. Several have been called upon by the FMB to serve in a variety of ways to further the work in Cyprus while they await the arrival of Pastor Sterrett this August. John and Willard McMillan, Norman Carson, Bruce Stewart and their respective wives have served the FMB in this effort during the past year. Pastor Renwick Wright is similarly being used in the HMB's "Pastor's Pastor" effort. We give thanks to our gracious God for the health, incomes and willingness our retired men enjoy to serve Him in these many ways. Their wisdom and labor is truly a blessing to the church. As stated above Pastor William Sterrett is planning to take up his Cyprus labors in August. Please pray for Him, the Japanese Church as well as the Cyprus congregation as they all undertake this transition. We pray God would bless these final days of Mr. Sterrett's Japan labors and moves to Cyprus. Kelly Moore continues to serve as a Chaplain with the U.S. Army and is currently serving in Panama. Since the last meeting of the Synod we have had regular meetings in the fall and spring of 1995 - 1997. Our next scheduled meeting is to be held at the New Alexandria RPC on Nov. 7/8, 1997. Our Presbytery family camp at Laurelville is planned for August July 28 to Aug. 1, 1997. Our representative to the Geneva College Board of Corporators is Al Miller. Our representative to the Home Mission Board is Dean Smith. Our Moderator is Peter Smith and our Clerk is Robert Scmidtberger for the 1997-98 term. Our Ad Interim Commission Moderator is Dan Kepple.
