Plans for the 1998 Synod.
The Business of Synod Committee has set the tentative dates and location for
the 1998 Synod as June 12-19, 1998, at Geneva College. (At this meeting,
there will be a commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of Geneva College and
the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Reformed Presbytery.)
RECOMMENDATION #1: that the dates and location of the 1998 Synod be set
for June 12-19, 1998, at Geneva College.
Plans for the 1999 Synod.
In keeping with the past traditions, the Business of Synod Committee would like
to hold the 1999 Synod in central Indiana. The exact location and dates will be
determined later.
RECOMMENDATION #2: that Synod authorize the Business of Synod
Committee to continue with the plans to hold the 1999 Synod in central Indiana.
(The exact time and date will be presented for approval at the Synod of 1998.)
The Business of Synod Committee also discussed the possibility of having a
seminar as part of the 1999 Synod. Members of the Business of Synod
Committee have done some initial contact with Ken Sande to seeif he would be
available to conductall or part of his seminar on Biblical Reconciliation as either a
pre-Synod conference or work it in as part of the devotional times (including the
Lord's Day afternoon) of Synod.
RECOMMENDATION #3: that Synod authorize the Business of Synod
Committee to make plans to have a seminar in conjunaion with the 1999 Synod.
Presentation of Reports at Synod.
The Business of Synod Committee would like to propose a change in the way
reports are handled on the floor of Synod. It seems that a better way to handle
them would be to deal with questions on the report as a whole before going to the
recommendations. Often, questions and clarifications from items in the report
may have a bearing on the recommendations. Therefore, the Business of Synod
Committee would request the Moderator to field questions on the report as a
whole before proceeding to the recommendations.
Evaluation of Having No Synod in 1996.
The Synod of 1995 asked the Business of Synod Committee to bring in an
evaluation of having no Synod in 1996. At our meeting in the Fall of 1996, the
Business of Synod Committee noted the following items:
I) The International Conference can be successfully conducted without the
concurrent meeting of Synod.
2) The denomination has "survived" without a Synod in 1996.
3) No issues were brought before Synod's Ad Interim Commission that the
congregations or presbyteries felt were worthy of calling special meetings of
Synod. If Synod exists to facilitate the work of the presbyteries and
