The report of the Business of Synod Committee on Communications
was taken up again. Items 8-10 were adopted and are as follows:
Communication 97-8: Declaration concerning "Psalm Choruses".
Recommendation ft 8: that Communication 97-8 be referred to the Committee
to Revise the Directory for Worship, and to report to the Synod of 1998.
Communication 97-9: Petition to Deal with the American Presbyterian
Churches.
Recommendation tt 9: that Communication 97-9 be returned to the Atlantic
Presbytery on the following grounds: 1) the paper was not in an acceptable form
to be received by Synod; 2) procedures for congregations joining the RPCNA are
outlined in the Directory for Church Government. Any orall of the American
Presbyterian Churches are free to follow these; 3) the Interchurch Committee is
proposing a different direction than this paper.
Communication 97-10: Covenant with the Japan Presbytery
Recommendation ft 10: that Communication 97-10 be referred to a committee
of three elders to consult with Pastor Takiura and representatives of the Foreign
Mission Board, and to report to this meeting of Synod.
The Moderator announced the committee to meet with Pastor Takiura
and representatives of the FMB as follows: Ed Robson, Christopher
Wright, Charles Leach.
Item 5 from the Business of Synod Committee on the disposition of the
1996 reports was taken up and adopted. The reports appear in Appendix
A to the Minutes.
Following announcements, Synod took recess at 9:30 a.m.
MONDAY JULY 14, 1997, 1:30 P.M.
Synod re-convened at 1:30 p.m. being led in prayer by Samuel E.
Boyle.
The roll was passed.
The minutes of the morning session were read and approved.
Lt. Col. Tom Vann was introduced to the court. Chaplain Vann is
present to answer questions regarding the armed forces chaplaincy.
Mark Harrington from Lincoln, Nebraska, was introduced to the Synod
as a fraternal delegate representing the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
