162 MINUTES OF THE 1997 SYNOD OF THE New faculty appointments for the 1995-1996 year included: Dr. as Librarian, Dr. John Stein as Associate Professor of Mathematics and Mr. Gary VanderPlaats as Assistant Professor of Accounting. Tenure was granted to Dr. Randall Bergen, Mr. Harvey Johnson, Dr. Carol Luce, Dr. David Shaw, and Dr. Dean R. Smith. Two faculty members are retiring at the end of the academic year. They are Mrs. Betty Douglas in Humanities and Dr. Stanley Reyle in Mechanical Engineering. Faculty searches are continuing in Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities, and Psychology. BUSINESS/DEVELOPMENT RELATED AREAS The operating budget adopted for 1995-1996 showed general fund revenues and general fund expenditures of $21,955,000. We expect to end the fiscal year with a small surplus as well as to repay some of the past debt to the endowment fund. To help in the fulfillment of their financial responsibility the Administration and Trustees asked Deloitte sc Touche, P.C. to condua a fiscal management review. This report was quite extensive and included several recommendations which are being implemented. The College through CUTS is part of the United Response to New Era a joint effort to recover some of the funds placed with New Era. We are continuing to pursue maximized recovery with maximized peace among the creditors. Campus physical improvements during the past year include new windows and new classroom furniture in Old Main, new furniture in Clarke and Pearce Halls, and new bleachers in Metheny Field House. Some new parking lots were built and other areas were refurbished with new pavement and replacement lighting. The administration is continuing to seek a means to make some major capital improvements on the campus through both borrowing and fund raising. The proposal includes such projects as: a new track, construaion of a new academic building and purchase of a new apartment building for graduate student housing. Progress on the Route 18 project is slow but is continuing. With the College conducting the engineering and environmental work that progress may be sped up. Work on the $20,000,000 Capital Campaign, "Keeping Faith with the Future" has continued at a somewhat slower pace than originally anticipated, but is now ready to begin its public phase. Synod as of 12/31/95 Size of Campus (114 acres) (114 acres) * At cost less accumulated depreciation. STUDENT RELATED AREAS Total on-campus enrollment for the firstsemester of 1995-96 was 1503. Offcampus enrollment was 195. During the second semester on-campus enrollment was 1465 with off-campus enrollment numbering 171. Trustee scholarships were awarded this year to the following students: Christen Adels, Hope Dawson, Andrew Gallagher, Traci Keim, Morgan Tait McMillan, Jenelle Elizabeth Spear, and Steven C. Wing. The College was saddened during the past year by the deaths of three students. Matthew Bellows and Janacyn Seltzer were killed in an automobile accident between semesters, and Mark Odum died in February. Appropriate memorial services were conduaed for each of these students. Charges to resident students in the 1996-1997 academic year have been set at $5,350 per semester for tuition and $350 per credit hour. Room charges will be $1,100 per semester and Board $1,200. The 1996 Commencement exercises were held on Saturday, May 11, 1996 in Metheny Field House with the commencement address being given by Dr. William Pannell, Professor of Preaching and Praaical Theology and Dean of Chapel at Fuller Theological Seminary. Baccalaureate services were held on Friday evening, May 10, with Saleem Ghubril, Executive Direaor of The Pittsburgh Projea, being the speaker. 489 candidates were awarded degrees. Of these, 166 were from the Degree Completion Program and 60 from CUTS, awarded at a separate ceremony in Philadelphia. 458 received bachelor's degrees, 18 received associate degrees, 26 received the MA in Professional Psychology, and 2 received the MA in Higher Education. In addition the following honorary degrees were conferred: Dr. John H. Gerstner, Doaor of Literature (Awarded in Johnstown on March 17 one week before his death.) Miss Rachel George, Doaor of Literature Dr. William E. Pannell, Doaor of Christian Service BOARD RELATED AREAS Board officers for 1995-1996 have been Joseph Lamont, Chairman, Bruce Stewart, Vice-Chairrnan, and Joyce Lynn, Secretary. Meetings of the Board were held on October 26 and 27, 1995, January 25 and 26, 1996, and April 25 and 26, 1996. New trustees joining the Board in Oaober were Barry Rosales, Bonnie Weir, and Dennis Wing. Many Board members continue to serve the College in extensive ways beyond their investment in regular and special meetings. Officers for the coming year, to take effect in October 1996 are:
