fasting must be done by all <strong>the</strong> altar vessels such as <strong>the</strong> water<br />
jug and <strong>the</strong> chalice. All vessels must be completely dried and<br />
wiped after washing <strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> Mass. The veil<br />
must be kept upside down <strong>to</strong> dry and <strong>the</strong> water jug must be<br />
emptied and left <strong>to</strong> dry upside down at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> Mass.<br />
This is fasting.<br />
iv. The rite of <strong>the</strong> deacon going out <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> congregation with<br />
<strong>the</strong> plate of incense during <strong>the</strong> Mass is not practiced now,<br />
but it is still practiced in <strong>the</strong> prayers of Prostration at <strong>the</strong><br />
evening of Pentecost Sunday.<br />
It is done as follows...<br />
i. At <strong>the</strong> end of Tasbeha (Praises), and before <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />
of <strong>the</strong> prayer, <strong>the</strong> deacon ignites some coal which is placed in<br />
a certain bowl. He <strong>the</strong>n takes <strong>the</strong> plate containing <strong>the</strong> incense<br />
beads, and passes through <strong>the</strong> congregation so that<br />
everybody may take a few beads.<br />
ii. Each person mentions <strong>the</strong> names of those <strong>the</strong>y know who<br />
have departed, and with each name <strong>the</strong>y take a bead and<br />
place it in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand. This is done until all <strong>the</strong> departed<br />
have been remembered. The deacon <strong>the</strong>n passes through<br />
with two empty plates; one for <strong>the</strong> incense of <strong>the</strong> departed<br />
and one for <strong>the</strong> surplus incense beads.<br />
iii. The deacon returns <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> altar, placing <strong>the</strong> incense plate<br />
containing <strong>the</strong> incense beads with <strong>the</strong> names of <strong>the</strong> departed<br />
on <strong>the</strong> table before <strong>the</strong> priest, who is praying <strong>the</strong><br />
Thanksgiving Prayer in order <strong>to</strong> begin <strong>the</strong> first Prostration.<br />
