Paten, saying, "Blessed be <strong>the</strong> Lord, Jesus Christ, <strong>the</strong> Son<br />
of God, and sanctified by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> Spirit. Amen."<br />
V Lifting <strong>the</strong> Espadikon above signifies:<br />
• The lifting up of <strong>the</strong> Saviour <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> cross for <strong>the</strong><br />
salvation of all, "That whoever believes in Him should<br />
not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:15) ;<br />
• The Resurrection of <strong>the</strong> Saviour <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> dead <strong>to</strong> raise us<br />
with Him <strong>to</strong> be amongst those in heaven ;<br />
• The greatness of <strong>the</strong>se Holies, for whoever partakes of<br />
<strong>the</strong>m must be virtuous, holy, ready and repentant. That is<br />
why <strong>the</strong> priest lifts <strong>the</strong> Espadikon and says, "The Holies<br />
are for those who are holy."<br />
One church cannon states, "If prayers are integrated, let <strong>the</strong><br />
priest say through <strong>the</strong> first deacon: 'Who is pure, approach<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> Mysteries, and who is not pure should not<br />
approach <strong>the</strong>m, so that he is not burned by <strong>the</strong> fire of<br />
Divinity. Whoever causes a friend <strong>to</strong> stumble, or has an<br />
adulterous thought, or is drunk with wine, do not<br />
approach.'"<br />
V When he says, "Blessed be <strong>the</strong> Lord, Jesus Christ", he<br />
makes <strong>the</strong> sign of <strong>the</strong> cross over <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> Body with <strong>the</strong><br />
Espadikon, as blessing is always accompanied by <strong>the</strong> sign<br />
of <strong>the</strong> cross, which is <strong>the</strong> sign of Christ, glory be <strong>to</strong> Him.<br />
V After making <strong>the</strong> sign of <strong>the</strong> cross on <strong>the</strong> Body by <strong>the</strong><br />
Espadikon which has now been dipped in <strong>the</strong> blood, <strong>the</strong><br />
