He asks God <strong>to</strong> grant you here on earth His divine riches, such<br />
as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> Bible, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> Communion, and an inheritance in<br />
His eternal kingdom, as well as granting us earthly comfort, so<br />
that our good Lord may smell <strong>the</strong> sweet aroma of <strong>the</strong> incense of<br />
thanksgiving arising up <strong>from</strong> you, and being presented before<br />
His throne.<br />
Finally, he asks God <strong>to</strong> bes<strong>to</strong>w on you <strong>the</strong> various spiritual<br />
virtues, so that you, <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> priest, might deserve <strong>the</strong><br />
Kingdom of Heaven.<br />
V In <strong>the</strong> third absolution, he asks for many gifts and blessings<br />
for you:<br />
• That God may grant you His rich mercy<br />
• That God may cut all <strong>the</strong> bondages of sins, so that Christ<br />
might free you, “Therefore if <strong>the</strong> Son makes you free, you<br />
shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). When you feel <strong>the</strong> grace<br />
and freedom of Christ, you can say with <strong>the</strong> Psalmist, “You<br />
have loosened my bonds, I will offer <strong>to</strong> You <strong>the</strong> sacrifice of<br />
thanksgiving, and will call upon <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> Lord. I<br />
will pay my vows <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord, now in <strong>the</strong> presence of all<br />
His people, in <strong>the</strong> court’s of <strong>the</strong> Lord’s house, in <strong>the</strong> midst<br />
of you O Jerusalem” (Psalm 116:16-19).<br />
• He asks for <strong>the</strong> absolution and forgiveness of all <strong>the</strong> sins you<br />
have committed, saying, “If we have committed any sin<br />
against You, whe<strong>the</strong>r knowingly or unknowingly, or<br />
through anguish of heart, in deeds or words, O Master who<br />
knows <strong>the</strong> weakness of men, grant us forgiveness, purify us<br />
and absolve us.” Here, <strong>the</strong> priest asks for <strong>the</strong> grace of <strong>the</strong><br />
