7, <strong>and</strong> 8 cover only a s<strong>in</strong>gle area, Livelihood Zone 2 covers two areas, Zone 4 covers three areas, <strong>and</strong> Zone 6<br />

covers four areas. For those zones cover<strong>in</strong>g only one area, only one site was selected. For the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g zones,<br />

the research team selected the two largest areas that they covered <strong>and</strong> selected one site <strong>in</strong> each area. This<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ated Zone 4 <strong>in</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Cape Mount County <strong>and</strong> Zone 6 <strong>in</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Gedeh County <strong>and</strong> Gbapolu County.<br />

This left the research team with a total of 10 areas with one clan unit selected from each.<br />

Subsequently, due to security issues along the Cote d‟Ivoire border, Livelihood Zone 7 <strong>in</strong> Nimba County was<br />

replaced with Dobli Clan <strong>in</strong> Bong County (Livelihood Zone 1) <strong>and</strong> Livelihood Zone 4 <strong>in</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong> County was<br />

replaced with Nitrian Community – comprised of two official clans <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>oe County (also Livelihood Zone 4).<br />

The selection of Nitrian Community was also based on the <strong>in</strong>terests of the USAID <strong>L<strong>and</strong></strong> Rights <strong>and</strong> Community<br />

Forest Project <strong>in</strong> undertak<strong>in</strong>g a tenure assessment <strong>in</strong> the region where the project supported community forest<br />

efforts. In the case of three other selected sites, <strong>in</strong>itial selections were discarded <strong>and</strong> replaced with clans that<br />

reflected the specific <strong>in</strong>terest of the <strong>L<strong>and</strong></strong> Commission to underst<strong>and</strong> tenure dynamics <strong>in</strong> those areas.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al selection comprises the clan units below:<br />

1. LR 01: Upper Workor–Lofa;<br />

2. LR 01: Dobli, Bong;<br />

3. LR 02 Area 1: Mana–Gr<strong>and</strong> Cape Mount;<br />

4. LR 02 Area 2: Ylan–Nimba;<br />

5. LR 03: Motor Road–S<strong>in</strong>oe;<br />

6. LR 04 Region 1: Little Kola–Gr<strong>and</strong> Bassa;<br />

7. LR 04 Region 2: Nitrian–S<strong>in</strong>oe (also served as a case study for the <strong>L<strong>and</strong></strong> Rights <strong>and</strong> Community Forestry<br />

Project supported by the FDA <strong>and</strong> USAID);<br />

8. LR 06 Area 1: Tengia (Foya District)–Lofa;<br />

9. LR 06 Area 2: Saykleken, River Gee; <strong>and</strong><br />

10. LR 08: D<strong>in</strong>g–Montserrado.<br />

In addition, Gbanshay Clan <strong>in</strong> Bong County was r<strong>and</strong>omly selected from those clans surround<strong>in</strong>g the city of<br />

Gbargna. Gbanshay Clan served as the pilot site for field tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on Rapid Rural Appraisal methods. Therefore,<br />

<strong>in</strong> total, the team carried out 11 case studies.<br />
