Settlements and other buildings abound in all coastal
areas in Verde Island Passage (as shown in Tables
43, 44, and 45). Meanwhile, some portions have been
used as public ports and docking areas for fishing
boats (Tables 46 and 47). Only Calatagan has allotted
a portion for the establishment of fishponds (Table
48). Accurate figures for most of these indicators
could not be determined at the workshop, but there
was a consensus that there were too many manmade
establishments located in foreshore areas. The
participants agreed that the very presence of all these
settlements and buildings were exacerbating coastal
erosion and pollution of their waters, thus already
threatening resources even without the onset of climate
change.
