THE OLD COMPANIES. 121 The company remained in service until August 3, 1878, and worked the engine at three fires, all in Needham. The hose-cart was taken to a number of <strong>Newton</strong> fires, and worked with a hydrant stream at most of them. February 1, 1878, Hose Co. No. 7 went into service, and took possession of the hose-cart and house. During its short existence, the "hayseeds," as this company was called, had numerous jollifications. Its first and most important was June 17, 1877, a picnic in Richardson's grove, on the banks of the Charles, just above the pumping-station. Sports, music, a fish chowder, with after-dinner speeches, etc., was the programme. Fast day, April 1, 1878, after a trial of the engine at New Pond, the company had a supper in the old school-house hall. The last fire the engine attended while in <strong>Newton</strong> was the burning of D. Burke's dwellinghouse, in Needham, April 10,1878, at -1 :30 o'clock, A. M., when it was worked by volunteers an hour and a half. In 187'J the engine was taken by a New York concern in part payment for hook-and-ladder truck No. 1 (now No. 2), and subsequently sold to Lake Charles, La., where it now is in active service. The records of this company prior to 1867 have been destroyed, and only a partial list of its officers before that time can be obtained, and no
