T Newton Lower Falls, in May, 1813,
was organized Newton's first fire
company, Cataract No. 1, named
for the cataract in Charles River,
within a few feet of the company's
location for more than half a century.
In compliance with an act passed by the state
legislature, mentioned in the preceding chapter.
the selectmen of Newton, May 3, 1813, appointed
Francis Hoogs, Isaac Hagar, Ephraim Jackson,
James Bunce, Edward Fisher, John Greenwood,
Joshua Jackson, Jr., George Hooker,
Henry
Bartlett, Daniel Seaver,
Amos Hagget, and
Nathan Hyde enginemen to engine No. 1.
At
about the same time the selectmen of Needham
appointed that town's quota ; but as the records
of the company, and of the Needham selectmen
at this time, cannot be found, there is no record
