of which he was so long a member, and succeeded
in placing it among the very best on this
continent.
To the department he gave the best
that was within him, even to his life.
The high esteem in which he was held by the
department and the public was demonstrated
Tuesday evening, September 16, 1879, when the
entire department turned out to receive him on
his return from the annual convention of the
National Association of Fire Engineers, held
at Washington, D. C, and with torches escorted
him to the city hall, where a complimentary
banquet was tendered him.
Many private and
public buildings along the route were decorated
in his honor, and red fire burned along the threemile
route from the Newton depot to the hall.
He was received by Mayor W. B. Fowle and
other city and department officials.
