1822-1871.
Motto: Prompt in Danger.
Ill 1822 residents of the West Parish formed
a stock company and purchased a small fire-engine
for the protection of that then sparsely
settled farming community.
The engine was
named Despatch, and February 4th the selectmen
appointed the following persons engine-men
to operate it : —

Aaron Baker.
William Alden.
Abijah Fuller-.
Adolphus Smith.
Joseph Mead.
Henry Smith.
Ashel Gould.
John D. Peck.
Darius Smith.
Enoch Smith, Jr.
Thomas Houghton.
Silas Ross.
William Smith.
Seth Davis.
There is no record whatever of this company
except the appointment of its members, which
were constantly changing, more so than in any
other company.
The new members appointed,
