' EARLIEST RECORD.
On page 30 of this volume, reference is made
to the purchase of an engine at the Lower Falls
in 1808.
After this portion of the volume had

been printed, the following document relating
thereto was found: —
" We the subscribers hereby agree to become
proprietors of Engine No. 1, which is ever to be
located at some convenient place at the Lower
Falls, so called, and to be promptly and readily
used by enginemen in protecting and preservingall
property situated within a distance where it
can possibly be useful.

' We further agree that there shall be one
hundred shares in said engine, at the sum of five
dollars for each share, and that each share be
entitled to one vote in regulating said engine,
and further promise that we will take and pay
for, at that sum, as many shares as are set
against our names, the said sums to be paid to
Peter Lyon, upon his giving us a certificate in
the following words : —
"This is to certify that A B is one of the proprietors
of the engine at the Lower Falls, and
that he has taken and paid for
Samuel Brown
shares.
