58 ORGANIZATION. burned, January 14, 1874, engine No. 1 was undergoing repairs at Manchester, N. H., and a relief engine borrowed of the Boston department became disabled at the commencement of the fire. Engine No. 3, which was then, as it had been for some time, awaiting orders at the Amoskeag shops in Manchester, was telegraphed for, and arrived the next day, and at once placed in service in No. 1 station, where it remained in service until that engine was returned, February 5th. It was then stored there until May 2, 1874, when it was transferred to the Centre and placed in service. ' The hose-carriage for engine No. 3 was located in the room vacated by engine No. 2 in the town hall building, West Newton, in June, 1873, and a temporary Hose Co. No. 3 organized, with Henry L. Bixby as foreman. It was transferred to the Centre when the engine was. A new Hunneman horse hose-carriage was received by Engine Co. No. 1 June 19, 1874, ami their old Philadelphia carriage transferred to the truck-house on Austin Street, Newtonville, and Hose Co. No. 4 was organized and placed in service in August. Hose 5 succeeded Triton band-engine No. 3 at Auburndale, April 1, 1871. Hose *! succeeded Cataract No. 1 hand-engine at the Lower Falls, February 1, 1877, and Hose 7, band-engine Mei chanic No. 4 at the Upper Palls, February 1,
ORGANIZATION. 59 1878. Hose 8 went into service at Nonantum July 1, 1893. Chemical A went into service at No. 2 engine station, West Newton, June 25, issc. Chemical B and Truck 2, at Newton Highlands, July 1, 1891. The first hose-wagon was received by Hose Co. 7 January 81, 189:;. Prior to that time, al! engine and hose companies were using fourwheeled horse hose-carriages. All companies are now provided with hose-wagons, the last to go into service being No.
