According to date of organization, Hose No.
5 should have been No. 4, as it was organized
some five months before No. 4 company.
It
went into service March 19, 1*74, to take the
place of Triton Engine Co. No. 3.
Its fiist company consisted of G. N. B.
Cousins, foreman, J. H. Dolliver, assistant, C.
W. Whitmarsh, clerk, W. F. Hadlock, C. W.
Cousins, J. S. Earl, E. C. Winslow, R. H.
Mears, Clark Cook, and Charles Fletcher.
A Hunnemaii four-wheeled horse hose-carriage
was purchased for it, which was named
J. Willard Rice, in honor of the then alderman
of that ward.
July 3, 1875, the engineers reduced the membership
of the company from ten to six, and
discharged four of its members, including the
foreman, Gr. N. B. Cousins, which caused the
company to disband.
Another company was organized October 12th,
consisting of Henry Johnson, foreman, Joseph
Cook, clerk, L. F. Johnson, Carroll
White,
Arthur Richards, and John Cunningham.
