on investment. This trend will help the deployment of Internet of Things<br />

applications and the creation of smart environments and spaces. An illustration<br />

of Smart World is presented in Figure 2.12.<br />

At the city level, the integration of technology and quicker data analysis<br />

will lead to a more coordinated and effective civil response to security and<br />

safety (law enforcement and blue light services); higher demand for outsourcing<br />

security capabilities.<br />

At the building level, security technology will be integrated into systems<br />

and deliver a return on investment to the end-user through leveraging the<br />

technology in multiple applications (HR and time and attendance, customer<br />

behaviour in retail applications etc.).<br />

There will be an increase in the development of “Smart” vehicles which<br />

have low (and possibly zero) emissions. They will also be connected to infrastructure.<br />

Additionally, auto manufacturers will adopt more use of “Smart”<br />

materials.<br />

Intelligent packaging will be a “green” solution in its own right, reducing<br />

food waste. Intelligent materials will be used to create more comfortable clothing<br />

fabrics. Phase-change materials will help regulate temperatures in buildings,<br />

reducing energy demand for heating and cooling. Increasing investment
