2.2.3 Application Areas<br />

In the last few years the evolution of markets and applications, and therefore<br />

their economic potential and their impact in addressing societal trends and<br />

challenges for the next decades has changed dramatically. Societal trends<br />

are grouped as: health and wellness, transport and mobility, security and<br />

safety, energy and environment, communication and e-society, as presented<br />

in Figure 2.15. These trends create significant opportunities in the markets<br />

of consumer electronics, automotive electronics, medical applications, communication,<br />

etc. The applications in these areas benefit directly by the More-<br />

Moore and More-than-Moore semiconductor technologies, communications,<br />

networks, and software developments.<br />

Potential applications of the IoT are numerous and diverse, permeating into<br />

practically all areas of every-day life of individuals (the so-called “smart life”),<br />

enterprises, and society as a whole. The 2010 Internet of Things Strategic<br />

Research Agenda (SRA) [19] has identified and described the main Internet<br />

of Things applications, which span numerous applications — that can be<br />
