PUBLIC SAFETY<br />
The mission of the Office of Public Safety is to maintain an orderly and safe collegial<br />
atmosphere for faculty, staff, students and visitors that is conducive to learning. The Office has<br />
the responsibility for the management of campus parking, fire and crime prevention, emergency<br />
preparedness, medical assistance, and overall campus safety. The officers also provide logistical<br />
support for large campus events and offer special education programs on safety and personal<br />
protection.<br />
Crime Awareness and the Jeanne Clery Act<br />
<strong>Tougaloo</strong> <strong>College</strong> complies fully with the published mandates of the <strong>Student</strong> Right-to-Know and<br />
Public Safety Act (Public Law 101-542), the Higher Education Technical Amendment of 1991<br />
(Public Law 102-26), the Higher Education Amendment of 1992 (Public Law 102-325) and the<br />
Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Public Safety Policy and Campus Statistics Act (20 U.S.C. Section<br />
1092 (f).<br />
Each year, <strong>Tougaloo</strong> <strong>College</strong> prepares and publishes an annual report containing the information<br />
required by Section 485 (f) of the Higher Education Act or 20 U.S.C. Section 1092 (f) and<br />
distributes it in the <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>, on the college web page, and handouts throughout the<br />
year. Handouts are available in the Human Resources Office, Registrar’s Office and the Office<br />
of <strong>Student</strong> Affairs. This information is distributed to all employees, applicants for employment<br />
and students when a request is made.<br />
Procedures for Reporting Crimes and Emergencies<br />
Campus crime is a reality and prevention is a responsibility of the entire campus community.<br />
Apathy is criminal ally. If you witness or suspect a criminal act, do not assume someone else<br />
will or has reported it. You should report any crime, suspicious behavior, or emergency on<br />
campus to Public Safety. The following steps should be taken to report criminal actions or other<br />
emergencies occurring on campus:<br />
1. If the emergency occurs in the residence hall, contact the Residential Hall Coordinator or<br />
Public Safety<br />
2. If the emergency occurs on the campus away from the residence hall, contact Public<br />
Safety (ext. 7857/6180)<br />
3. If the emergency occurs away from the campus, Call 911<br />
Note: Contact the Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s for follow up<br />
When calling Public Safety, provide the following information:<br />
1. Your name<br />
2. The location of the incident<br />
3. A description of the suspect(s) and names, if possible<br />
4. A description of any vehicle, including license plate number, if possible<br />
5. The nature of the incident<br />
