2. The analytical model<br />

As to <strong>the</strong> analytical framework, we partly draw on <strong>the</strong> model by Glomm <strong>and</strong> Ravikumar<br />

(1992), which takes <strong>in</strong>to consideration <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> family educational background on<br />

children’s human capital accumulation. In our model, parents’ human capital <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> religion <strong>in</strong><br />

which <strong>in</strong>dividuals have been raised, def<strong>in</strong>e family background. Our economy is characterized by<br />

overlapp<strong>in</strong>g generations where <strong>in</strong>dividuals live for two periods <strong>and</strong> die at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second<br />

period. In <strong>the</strong> first period, t, <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old generation are endowed with a stock <strong>of</strong> human<br />

, def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g family educational background. Individuals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> young generation born <strong>in</strong> t<br />

are raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> religion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old generation. In this model religion corresponds to religious<br />

Our ma<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t is that religion is believed to shape children’s attitudes <strong>and</strong> motivations towards<br />

education <strong>and</strong> to affect <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r factors – <strong>the</strong> time devoted to <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong><br />

education, <strong>in</strong>dividual abilities <strong>and</strong> family human capital – on <strong>the</strong> process generat<strong>in</strong>g human capital.<br />

Specifically religion alone always positively <strong>in</strong>fluences education with ]0,1[, as one cannot<br />

overlook <strong>the</strong> argument that it generally transmits values like hard-work <strong>and</strong> self-discipl<strong>in</strong>e that<br />

facilitate learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> educational achievements. The parameter captures also <strong>the</strong> fact that<br />

religion may present a conservative dimension promot<strong>in</strong>g fatalism <strong>and</strong> hamper<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividual selfreliance,<br />

whereas a less conservative religion may foster modern values like self-determ<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

along with <strong>in</strong>dependence. Conservative values discourage human capital accumulation as higher<br />
