volunteer<strong>in</strong>g? Well, <strong>the</strong>y are no more ignorant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problems fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> world, <strong>the</strong>y become more confident<br />

<strong>and</strong> courageous when <strong>the</strong>y confront difficulties for <strong>the</strong> first time, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir communication skills are better.<br />

Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g is generally considered an altruistic activity <strong>and</strong> it is <strong>in</strong>tended to promote good or improve<br />

human quality <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

Also, volunteer<strong>in</strong>g means to <strong>in</strong>teract with o<strong>the</strong>r young people shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same values <strong>and</strong> been engaged<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same type <strong>of</strong> activities, <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g process occur <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r, exchang<strong>in</strong>g previous<br />

experiences <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir results <strong>and</strong> that signifies actually learn<strong>in</strong>g by do<strong>in</strong>g. ‘Learn<strong>in</strong>g by do<strong>in</strong>g’ is considered<br />

<strong>the</strong> most efficient way <strong>of</strong> acquir<strong>in</strong>g knowledge <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> easiest too <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual effort.<br />

Look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> personal growth, <strong>the</strong> testimonials are focused on <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> volunteers are becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more compassionate, <strong>the</strong>y bound more easily with less fortunate people <strong>and</strong> become aware <strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong>y<br />

already got <strong>and</strong> more appreciative <strong>and</strong> responsible toward those who made this possible (parents, school,<br />

organizations <strong>and</strong> <strong>society</strong>).<br />

Recent studies revealed <strong>the</strong> fact that volunteer<strong>in</strong>g generates a high emotional <strong>in</strong>volvement that will drive<br />

people to volunteer aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future, not necessarily <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same project, <strong>and</strong> not necessarily at <strong>the</strong> same<br />

scale <strong>of</strong> time allocation.<br />

Also, volunteer<strong>in</strong>g goes beyond <strong>the</strong> beneficiaries’ ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> benefits. Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g has <strong>the</strong> ability to give<br />

back on o<strong>the</strong>r levels. Some psychological studies demonstrate that volunteer<strong>in</strong>g can have a direct effect on<br />

<strong>the</strong> chemicals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>. Be<strong>in</strong>g socially engaged <strong>in</strong> cognitive activities - such as volunteer<strong>in</strong>g- <strong>in</strong> midlife<br />

<strong>and</strong> early late life may avoid risks for Alzheimer disease <strong>and</strong> dementia. Experience Corps organization<br />

(http://www.aarp.org/experience-corps/) has identified <strong>the</strong> <strong>characteristics</strong> <strong>of</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> how <strong>the</strong>y work<br />

at <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> level too. The conclusion posted on <strong>the</strong>ir website is that: “giv<strong>in</strong>g back to your community may<br />

slow <strong>the</strong> age<strong>in</strong>g process <strong>in</strong> ways that lead to a higher quality <strong>of</strong> life <strong>in</strong> older adults”.<br />

Foster<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> culture <strong>of</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g among <strong>the</strong> young generation is important for <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

future older age as well as for <strong>society</strong>, so reasons for becom<strong>in</strong>g a volunteer were listed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> most relevant<br />

are : make <strong>new</strong> friends, explore careers <strong>and</strong> personal <strong>in</strong>terests, earn recommendations for future employment<br />

applications, develop job skills, build a strong résumé <strong>in</strong> early stage <strong>of</strong> personal development, learn <strong>in</strong> a non<br />

formal manner, discover hidden skills <strong>and</strong> talents, build self-confidence, <strong>and</strong> make a difference.<br />

2.3. Personal development as a result <strong>of</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

In order to demonstrate <strong>the</strong> close relationship between personal development <strong>and</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> UK<br />

National Youth Agency has conducted a research on young people’s volunteer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> skills development.<br />

The research report exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> relationship between skills development <strong>and</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g as an <strong>in</strong>formal<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g process. Look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> key f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> this report, it is clear that young people identify a wide range<br />

<strong>of</strong> personal <strong>and</strong> social skills developed just because <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>volved actively <strong>in</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g. What is miss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> some EU countries is a system that allows <strong>the</strong> flexible recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes. The field<br />

research confirmed <strong>the</strong> literature review evidences on <strong>the</strong> improved self-confidence <strong>and</strong> self-esteem <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

volunteers <strong>and</strong> also <strong>the</strong> enhancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir communication skills <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ability to work with people with<br />

various cultural backgrounds.<br />

Moreover, volunteer<strong>in</strong>g acts “as a catalyst for young people to engage more effectively with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g, or <strong>in</strong> some cases re-engage with formal learn<strong>in</strong>g or tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> a position where <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can develop skills <strong>and</strong> potentially ga<strong>in</strong> qualifications”[5]. Many young people also develop practical skills<br />

related to <strong>the</strong>ir specific experiences <strong>of</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

3. Case study - Young Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g for Social Entrepreneurship (YVSE)<br />

Currently, social entrepreneurship becomes more <strong>and</strong> more a viable alternative for entrepreneurs <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>society</strong> mostly due to <strong>the</strong> economic crisis <strong>and</strong> its consequences. Encourag<strong>in</strong>g young people to get<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> social entrepreneurship is desirable but one needs to th<strong>in</strong>k to develop social entrepreneurial
