1. Introduction<br />

Young people are constantly engaged <strong>in</strong> formal <strong>and</strong> non-formal learn<strong>in</strong>g processes. It is obvious that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would like to acquire <strong>new</strong> skills, to develop <strong>the</strong>ir abilities <strong>and</strong> competencies <strong>in</strong> order to fit <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>society</strong> <strong>and</strong> to contribute to <strong>the</strong>ir own personal <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional development as much as to <strong>the</strong> societal<br />

development. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir youth, people learn to become responsible for <strong>the</strong>ir own life paths <strong>and</strong> to give<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g back to those who help <strong>the</strong>m to grow: parents, friends, teachers, <strong>society</strong>. Learn<strong>in</strong>g is a process that<br />

never ends <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>volves a lot <strong>of</strong> effort <strong>and</strong> commitment from learners dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir entire life. Non-formal<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g tends to become more popular, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reasons is that it is not organized or restrictive, it has no<br />

specific objective <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes, <strong>and</strong> it is not <strong>in</strong>tentional from <strong>the</strong> learner’s perspective. It<br />

refers to learn<strong>in</strong>g by experience or just hav<strong>in</strong>g an experience that build some skills. Non-formal education<br />

means that <strong>in</strong>dividuals are constantly exposed to learn<strong>in</strong>g situations, at work, at home or dur<strong>in</strong>g leisure time<br />

for <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y acquire knowledge do<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs. This def<strong>in</strong>ition, with a few exceptions [6] also meets<br />

with a fair degree <strong>of</strong> consensus. Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>of</strong>ten considered as <strong>in</strong>formal education for various reasons:<br />

it exposes <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual to learn<strong>in</strong>g situations, it improves people’s employability <strong>and</strong> career prospects, it<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> solidarity <strong>and</strong> enhances active citizenship [4].<br />

2. Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g today<br />

2.1. What does volunteer<strong>in</strong>g mean <strong>in</strong> Europe nowadays?<br />

Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>in</strong> EU have not had <strong>the</strong> expected development as we, <strong>the</strong> Europeans, would<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k. EU Commission understood <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> volunteer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> has taken action: a decision <strong>in</strong> favour<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European Year <strong>of</strong> Voluntary Activities Promot<strong>in</strong>g Active Citizenship (2011) boosted volunteer<strong>in</strong>g at
