H.2 In a collectivity sufficiently developed, modern values thoroughly permeate religion so that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may:<br />

- ei<strong>the</strong>r re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> positive <strong>and</strong> relatively higher <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> less traditional religions with<br />

respect to conservative religions on children’s educational achievements;<br />

- or counterbalance <strong>the</strong> curb<strong>in</strong>g though positive <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> more traditional religions to<br />

such an extent as to improve children’s educational achievements.<br />

H.3 When <strong>the</strong> development level is not sufficiently high, traditional values prevail <strong>and</strong> can<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r curtail <strong>the</strong> curb<strong>in</strong>g effect <strong>of</strong> a conservative religion on children’s educational achievements.<br />

These hypo<strong>the</strong>ses are verified through <strong>the</strong> empirical model that is specified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent<br />

part.<br />

3. Data <strong>and</strong> empirical framework<br />

For <strong>the</strong> empirical part we have selected a sample <strong>of</strong> 1,684 <strong>in</strong>dividuals from <strong>the</strong> 2005 World<br />

Value Survey (WVS) dataset related to some Lat<strong>in</strong> American countries, nom<strong>in</strong>ally Argent<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru <strong>and</strong> Uruguay. The reason why <strong>the</strong>se countries<br />

were chosen is that <strong>the</strong>y present high heterogeneity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> data with respect to <strong>the</strong> more relevant<br />

variables – education, religion <strong>and</strong> development <strong>in</strong>dicators – used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> empirical analysis. The<br />

WVS ma<strong>in</strong>ly reports people’s values <strong>and</strong> beliefs <strong>and</strong> also <strong>the</strong>ir religious affiliation.<br />

In Table 1 <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>the</strong> descriptive statistics, <strong>in</strong> particular, our dependent variable (Ed)<br />

concerns <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have achieved ei<strong>the</strong>r a university degree or some level <strong>of</strong> university<br />

education. The <strong>in</strong>dividuals with university education represent 26% <strong>of</strong> our sample. As far as<br />

religious affiliation is concerned, we dist<strong>in</strong>guish between Catholics represent<strong>in</strong>g 93% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sample<br />

<strong>and</strong> Protestants represent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g part. This allows test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> above hypo<strong>the</strong>ses <strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong><br />

particular, verify<strong>in</strong>g whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> former have a stronger conservative dimension than <strong>the</strong> latter. As<br />

to this dist<strong>in</strong>ction, we take <strong>in</strong>to account that <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America Protestantism grew very slowly<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> grassroots dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century <strong>and</strong> more rapidly dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

century. More than Catholics, Protestants have been able to consider modernization as a process<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to people’s empowerment <strong>and</strong> greater adaptability to <strong>the</strong> <strong>new</strong> system. This has helped <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> lower classes <strong>in</strong>to Lat<strong>in</strong> American <strong>in</strong>dustrial societies (Escobar, 1997).<br />

As belong<strong>in</strong>g to a religious denom<strong>in</strong>ation does not necessarily embody <strong>in</strong>dividual religiosity,<br />

we also consider <strong>the</strong> Catholics <strong>and</strong> Protestants who def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>mselves as religious persons<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependently <strong>of</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g to church or not (Catholic*Religious). As to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

variables, males represent 46%, <strong>the</strong> mean age is 21.33 <strong>and</strong> leisure is important <strong>in</strong> one’s own life for<br />

29% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals considered. Given <strong>the</strong> <strong>characteristics</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> WVS dataset, family<br />

educational background is captured by <strong>the</strong> chief wage earner pr<strong>of</strong>ession/job expressed by fourteen<br />

dummies (see <strong>the</strong> empirical appendix). The geographical variation <strong>in</strong> human capital accumulation<br />

is taken <strong>in</strong>to account through country dummies. F<strong>in</strong>ally, as to <strong>the</strong> development level promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

modern values, our approach is <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with <strong>the</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong> Inglehart <strong>and</strong> Baker (2000). We
