I shall die, toge<strong>the</strong>rwith my wife <strong>and</strong> family.” He did not mention, even to his adjutant, that hehad just had his children murdered. ”You will burn our bodies. Can you dothat?”Schwaegermann assured him he could <strong>and</strong> sent two orderlies to procure <strong>the</strong>gasoline. A few minutes later, at about 8:30 p.m., just as it was getting darkoutside, Dr. <strong>and</strong> Frau Goebbels walked through <strong>the</strong> bunker, bade goodbye tothose who happened to be in <strong>the</strong> corridor, <strong>and</strong> mounted <strong>the</strong> stairs to <strong>the</strong> garden.There, at <strong>the</strong>ir request, an S.S. orderly dispatched <strong>the</strong>m with two shots in <strong>the</strong>back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head. Four cans <strong>of</strong> gasoline were poured over <strong>the</strong>ir bodies <strong>and</strong> seton fire, but <strong>the</strong> cremation was not well done, 1349 The survivors in <strong>the</strong> bunkerwere anxious to join <strong>the</strong> mass escape which was just getting under way <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>re was no time to waste on burning those already dead. The Russians found<strong>the</strong> charred bodies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Propag<strong>and</strong>a Minister <strong>and</strong> his wife <strong>the</strong> next day <strong>and</strong>immediately identified <strong>the</strong>m.By 9 o’clock on <strong>the</strong> evening <strong>of</strong> May 1, <strong>the</strong> Fuehrerbunker had been set onfire <strong>and</strong> some five or six hundred survivors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fuehrer’s entourage, mostlyS.S. men, were milling about in <strong>the</strong> shelter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Chancellery – like chickenswith <strong>the</strong>ir heads <strong>of</strong>f, as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> Fuehrer’s tailor, later recalled –preparatory to <strong>the</strong> great breakout. The plan was to go by foot along <strong>the</strong> subwaytracks from <strong>the</strong> station below <strong>the</strong> Wilhehnsplatz, opposite <strong>the</strong> Chancellery, to<strong>the</strong> Friedrichstrasse Bahnh<strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re cross <strong>the</strong> River Spree <strong>and</strong> sift through<strong>the</strong> Russian lines immediately to <strong>the</strong> north <strong>of</strong> it.
