The Accommodation and Food Services sector was the largest industry in <strong>Guam</strong> in 2007,employing about 22 percent of total island civilian employment. The following sectors thatsupport the tourism industry employed an additional 11,686 persons, or about 22 percent of thetotal island civilian employment: retail trade; arts, entertainment, and recreation; and otherservices. Together, all these sectors provide about 44 percent of civilian employment on <strong>Guam</strong>.Table 4-5 illustrates the total employment in <strong>Guam</strong> by industrial division as of 2000. As shownin Table 4-5, the village of Dededo is the center of economic activity in <strong>Guam</strong>, with 16,278employees or 28.5 percent of total employment. The village of Tamuning is the next largestcenter of economic activity, with 8,495 employees or 14.9 percent. The village of Yigo is theonly other village commanding more than 10 percent of <strong>Guam</strong>’s employment, with 6,181 or 10.8percent. (More recent data are not available for Table 4-5.) Table 4-5 also illustrates theimportance of tourism to the economy of <strong>Guam</strong>, with about 44 percent of jobs in the servicessector, which includes most tourism-related employment.4-8
