Message from the Chairman of the EuropeanPeptide SocietyThe 31 st European Peptide Symposium, the most recent biennial symposium organizedunder the auspices of the European Peptide Society was again a great success. A highlyinternational group of 882 scientists from all over the world met in Copenhagen,Denmark in September. For several reasons, this 31 st European Symposium has been a special one. Thescientific program offered to the participants was of very high quality. Althoughstructural aspects and biology of peptide and protein science were well represented, theprogram left a large place to all branches of chemistry.During the Council meeting of the European Peptide Society (EPS) on Monday alarge number of newly elected Representatives of peptide communities from differentcountries had a chance to meet for the first time in Copenhagen. According to thestatutes of the Society it was also the time to elect new members of the ExecutiveCommittee. The Council expressed its appreciation to retiring members. ProfessorEttore BENEDETTI from Italy has been the treasurer of the EPS for 4 years, afterbeing a member of the Executive Committee for 4 years. Professor Anna-MariaPAPINI from Italy has been elected as Treasurer of the EPS. Professor DavidANDREU from Spain, who acted as the Scientific Affairs Officer of the EPS for 2 x 4years, has been replaced by Professor Solange LAVIELLE from France. Both of them, beyond their involvement in their respective duties, have significantly andtremendously been committed for the European Peptide Society. Professor JeanMARTINEZ, being a member of the Executive Committee since 1990, having actedfirst as Scientific Affairs Officer for 4 years (1998-2001) then for 8 years (2002-2010)as President of the EPS, leaves the presidency to the new elected President, ProfessorFerenc HUDECZ from Hungary. Professor Hudecz served the Society as Secretary for2 x 4 years (2000-2008).I would like to warmly thank all members of the Council I had the chance towork with; they all were of great help in running the Society duties. A special mentionis to the colleagues of the Executive Committee who really efficiently assisted me inthe Society, always in a very friendly atmosphere. I would also like to address mythanks to all colleagues of the American, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian andIndian Peptide Societies for their contribution to the International Peptide Society. Lastbut not least, my warm thanks to all members of the European Peptide Society whohave made my period of Presidency so pleasant. One of my last duty as the President of EPS will be to congratulate and thank ourcolleagues Thomas HOEG-JENSEN, Knud JENSEN, Morten MELDAL, organizers ofthe 31 st European Peptide Symposium in Copenhagen and their teams, for offering tothe peptide community a so attractive scientific week around peptide and proteinscience.I and the newly elected President wish the new EPS council, the new ExecutiveCommittee, all of you, the European Peptide Society and Peptide Sciences, a greatsuccess for the future.Preceeding chairman of EPS, ProfessorJean MartinezLaboratoire des Aminoacides, Peptides etProtéines , Faculté de PharmacieCNRS-UMR, BP 14491,Av.
