The editorialstaff used the Abbey Street exit, and Joyce, who remembered these visitsin the Aeolus episode of Ulysses, has the newspaper boys using the sameexit, when in fact the despatch room was on the Prince's Street side. Thistransposition may have been inadvertent, but was more probably a deliberatedecision to add to the Aeolian atmosphere of haste and confusion.The publisher of the Freeman's Journal was Thomas Sexton, a Parnellitewho was feuding with Archbishop Walsh; consequently his paper minimizedwhatever the Archbishop did and enlarged upon everything thatCardinal Logue did. Walsh evidently made frequent protests, which Joycereferred to without explanation in the sentence in Ulysses, 'His gracephoned down twice this morning.'The evolution of the character of Aeolus, god of the winds, blended* Joyce wished to have it made of Claddagh gold from Galway, but none was obtainable.44In Ulysses (762 [904]), Molly remembers being given a 'clumsy Claddagh ring forluck.'
