454 / A M E S [ 1918-1919 ]Dear Miss Weaver:I ought to apologise for my impossible health which so often obliges meto appear discourteous. I enclose some notices of my play Exiles of whichyou were so good as to write favourably. I appreciate very much yourfriendly words about the Scylla-Charybdis episode of my book Ulysses butam sorry that it deprived you of sleep.* On most other readers I daresay itwill have the opposite effect. I sent some days ago the episode WanderingRocks to Mr Pound who is ill also. If he has not sent it to you could youwrite to him. As soon as I am able to work again I shall finish the Sirensand send it. I am much better this evening but my eyes are so capriciousthat I may be ill tomorrow. This time the attack was in my 'good?' eye sothat the decisive symptoms of iritis never really set in. It has been light butintermittent so that for five weeks I could do little or nothing except lieconstantly near a stove like a chimpanzee whom in many things I resemble.I received a copy of The Egoist with the second episode. I hope I shallbe able to finish the book this year or early next year. It is as difficult forme to write it as for my readers to read it. I asked Mr Chalast to conveymy thanks to Mr [Richard] Aldington and would ask you to convey myexcuses to Mr [Wyndham] Lewis. Two notices of his book Tan were promisedme but neither has appeared. As soon as I begin to go about I shalltry to push the matter. One was sent to a Dutch review eighteen monthsago and published last week! Mr [Carlo] Linati wrote to me during myillness and I shall write to him if the Italo-Swiss frontier is open now. Imust not omit to thank you for your prompt remittance of royalties inDecember. It was very useful to me. I hope that wretched book some daywill repay you even in part for all the trouble it has caused you.25.ii.919With renewed thanks and kind regardsSincerely yoursJames Joyce 12The eye trouble continued, but did not greatly impede his bustlingabout with several new projects. He persuaded the authorities of the MunicipalTheatre to stage Purcell's opera, Dido and Aeneas, but the plancollapsed because the Consulate would have nothing to do with a projectwith which Joyce was associated. Resilient, Joyce next advised Sykes topresent as the new offering of the English Players The Heather Field byEdward Martyn. This play, which Joyce remembered from its first performancein Dublin in 1899, was a precursor of Exiles, and Joyce wrotein the program note: 'Edward Martyn . . . is an accomplished musicianand man of letters. As a dramatist he follows the school of Ibsen andtherefore occupies a unique position in Ireland, as the dramatists writingfor the National Theatre have chiefly devoted their energies to peasantdrama. . . .' But, with the impartiality which had led him to lecture on* Ezra Pound also thought very well of this episode,t A Zurich friend.
