On her arrival she was apathetic, incapable of concentration, fullof ambivalent wishes, but a few days later she seemed oddly content withher surroundings. Then in March, Joyce's unquenchable expectation ofa miraculous cure was momentarily dashed by her 'pseudo-hallucinativedissociation' of mind, and by her several attempts to run away to Paris.During one of these she tried to seek refuge in a peasant hut, intendingto cross the border next day, but was found and brought back. Her conditionwas to grow worse instead of better. Joyce continued to hope; hewrote Frank Budgen on April 25, 'She'll get all right they say. One needsall Job's patience with Solomon's wisdom and the Queen of Sheba's pinmoneythrown in.' 86With Lucia away, it became possible for him to live at least a semblanceof ordinary life in Paris. Nora was indignant. The meeting was arranged for February 23, 1934. Joyce thought itmight help to revive the interest in Finnegans Wake which was flaggingas publication was delayed. The Honorable Mrs. Fellowes presided, testifyingto her enthusiasm for Joyce's work. When she sailed her yacht inthe Aegean, she said, i never lie in my deck chair without a copy ofUlysses by my side.' Then Dujardin was called upon, to salute Joyce'sdevelopment of the monologue interieur; Louis Gillet and Leon-Paul Farguealso made speeches, and the actress Rachel Behrendt, who knewEnglish and was coached by Joyce, read fragments from Work in Progress.Throughout the meeting Joyce sat languid in his chair, his long, finehands clasped on his knees, his eyes cast down like a bashful boy's, andof course altogether silent, having refused the Honorable Mrs. Fellowes'invitation to reply on the grounds that, it's not polite to speak aboutoneself.' 88Afterwards, however, he sought to have Rachel Behrendt'sreading recorded by the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Maria Jo-
