ART, DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENTAL PARTICIPATIONCommunity], Scenografi og kostyme [Scenography and Costumes], Trykk ogfoto [Pr<strong>in</strong>tmak<strong>in</strong>g and Photography] and Samisk visuell kultur [Sami <strong>Visual</strong>Culture], each encompass<strong>in</strong>g 140 supervised classes. It is, <strong>at</strong> most, possibleto <strong>at</strong>tend 1,260 (840+140+140+140) classes of art-rel<strong>at</strong>ed courses dur<strong>in</strong>g thethree years with<strong>in</strong> the general educ<strong>at</strong>ion programme <strong>at</strong> this level.Teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> university collegesA teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g certific<strong>at</strong>e is required for teach<strong>in</strong>g art and design <strong>in</strong> primaryand secondary educ<strong>at</strong>ion. There are three ways to qualify for sucha certific<strong>at</strong>e:• <strong>Educ<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> as classroom teacher with license to teach from level 1–10 <strong>in</strong> allsubjects. This degree is given <strong>at</strong> 18 n<strong>at</strong>ional colleges throughout the countryand lasts for 4 years (240 credits). Specialis<strong>at</strong>ion with<strong>in</strong> the subject Kunstog håndverk is optional.• Faglærerutdann<strong>in</strong>g i formgiv<strong>in</strong>g, kunst og håndverk [Specialised TeacherTra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Design, Art and Crafts] is offered <strong>at</strong> two university colleges:Avdel<strong>in</strong>g for estetiske fag (EST) <strong>at</strong> Høgskolen i Oslo (HiO) (Departmentof Art and Design <strong>Educ<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> <strong>at</strong> Oslo University College) and Avdel<strong>in</strong>g forestetiske fag, folkekultur og lærerutdann<strong>in</strong>g (EFL) <strong>at</strong> Høgskolen i Telemark(HiT) (Department for Aesthetics, Folklore and Teacher <strong>Educ<strong>at</strong>ion</strong><strong>at</strong> Telemark University College). This specialis<strong>at</strong>ion lasts for three years(180 credits). It is also possible to become a specialist by add<strong>in</strong>g one yearof an <strong>in</strong>tensive teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course to a degree as artist, designer orarchitect.• The third way to get a license is to <strong>at</strong>tend teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g educ<strong>at</strong>ionwith specialis<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> several aesthetic subjects such as arts, craft, music,Norwegian, dance, and drama. It is called Faglærerutdann<strong>in</strong>g i praktiskestetiskefag [Specialist Teacher Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Aesthetics] and it consists of180 credits, and is offered <strong>at</strong> five University Colleges which are loc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>Nesna, Agder, Telemark, Stord/Haugesund, and Tromsø.The teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>in</strong> art and design build upon various traditions.These traditions and epistemologies have been mapped and discussedby Jorunn Spord Borgen (1995), Karen Brænne (2004) and Marte Gulliksen(2006). The challenge for the teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes is to build uponsuch research and thus make traditions visible for a critical discussion rel<strong>at</strong>edto the educ<strong>at</strong>ional aims. Already <strong>in</strong> 1995, Jorunn Spord Borgen wrote th<strong>at</strong>130 NORDIC VISUAL ARTS EDUCATION IN TRANSITION
