5.6 Summary an d Recommen dations5.6.1 Audits were undertaken at the following railway stations: Axminster, Honitonand Exmouth. All three stations provide an acceptable range of facilities and auseful interchange. Axminster currently provides the best rail-bus interchangeof the three audited. As well as excellent information provision and waitingenvironment at the railway station and good walking routes to the very nearbus stops, the usefulness of the interchange offered is also the best of thethree. Exmouth also provides a useful interchange, with a functional butunattractive bus waiting environment, while Honiton is currently least usefu lbecause connecting buses only stop on their way to the coast and not on theway back. A walk of about 5 minutes is necessary to connect from buses totrain services in this direction.5.6.2 Information is rarely provided in bus publicity on connecting rail services (andvice versa), although there exceptions to this. Similarly, very few combinedfares exist within the study area, and where they exist these are rail ticketsvalid on certain bus services. There are no instances of on-bus issuing oftickets valid for bus and onward train travel (these are rare nationally 18 ).Interchange times (and consequent waiting times) vary very considerably atall three stations across the day or depending whether the passenger istransferring from train to bus or vice versa. There are situations where a shortdelay will mean connecting services are missed; conversely there areinstances of very long wait times.5.6.3 Table 5.2 summarises the rail-bus interchanges with six scores from 0 (worst)to 5 (best).
