3.7 Strategy Measure D: Enhan ce routes from accommodation sites to busstops an d bus stop in frastructure3.7.1 The benefit of proximity to a bus service is greatly reduced if the walkingroute to the bus stop is arduous or dangerous, and if the quality of the busstop infrastructure is poor. Whilst a detailed audit of walking routes and busstops has not been und ertaken, there are locations which could be improved.3.7.2 An audit of pedestrian access from camping and caravan sites to bus stopswould be useful for medium and large campsites where the nearest bus stop iswell used (or has the potential to be well used). Such an audit would identifyroutes where pedestrian improvements would be desirable, such as footwayson critical sections of highway, measures to reduce traffic speed, installationof pedestrian crossings, and investigating new Rights of Way or permittedpaths. An examp le of a pedestrian access checklist that could be used for thestudy area appears as Appendix B.3.7.3 The audit of pedestrian access would also identify bus stops that requireinfrastructure improvements. At a basic level this would mean ensuring everybus stop allows waiting passengers space to stand off the highway. It shouldalso ensure that all useful bus stops actually exist in some physical form (flag, timetable, hardstanding, etc as appropriate) so as to provide a visual cue tovisitors that a local bus service exists (see also Chapter 6 on bus information).3.8 Strategy Measure E: Improve visitors’ aw areness of local bus services atcamping an d caravan sites3.8.1 Regardless of how near or frequent bus services are to camping and caravansites, their use relies on visitors’ knowledge that they exist, where and whenthey run to and how to use them. Whilst good practice in the provision ofpublic transport information is set out in detail in Chapter 6 of this report, below are suggestions specific to promoting bus services on camping andcaravan sites.3.8.2 Although some of the camping and caravan sites on the Jurassic Coast alreadygive out useful pub lic transport information to their guests, the quality andquantity of information is variable. DeCC and DoCC could take a proactivestance and contact selected sites to dispense travel planning advice to helpsites.
