CONDENSER COOLING WATER<br />

Condenser cooling water is taken from an artificial lake which was created by damming a<br />

river at the same time the plant was constructed. The lake is used as a fish farm. and<br />

chemicals cannot be used to maintain condenser cleanliness. Therefore, condenser fouling<br />

with CaC0 3 , MgC0 3 and organics is a significant problem.<br />

Each condenser is cleaned twice per year and the average deposit thickness at the time of a<br />

cleaning is 3-4 mm. At the time of a condenser cleaning, there is a loss of condenser<br />

vacuum from 0.036 kgIcm 2 to 0.039 kg/cm 2 absolute pressure which causes as MW loss in<br />

generator output. Two condensers have Ukrainian design ball cleaning systems which were<br />

installed in 1990.<br />

BOILER MAKEUP WATER AND CITY WATER TREATMENT<br />

Lake water makeup is heated and sent to four (4) 150 TIH clarifiers and six (6) 3.0 meter<br />

diameter anthracite filters. From that point, water is sent to the city hot water district<br />

heating system softeners and to the boiler makeup water demineralizer. City water demand<br />

is 300 T/H and boiler makeup water demand is 240 TIH, and these two flows should be<br />

within the design rating of the equipment. However, the ion exchange material in the<br />

demineralizer is in such poor condition that lOOTIH are consumed in regenerating it. Also,<br />

the clarifiers are overloaded, suspended solids are overflowing, and large quantities of water<br />

are needed to backwash the filters.<br />

As a result of these conditions, the plant can meet a demand of 240 TIH for boiler<br />

feedwater, but can only supply 200 TIH to the city. The quality of city water is also not<br />

good due to high bacteria count. Another result of these conditions is high consumption of<br />

sulfuric acid and caustic soda for demineralizer regenerations.<br />

DISTRICT HEATING<br />

Steam is extracted from each turbine IP Cylinder to supply the district hot water heatmg of<br />

the nearby city and greenhouses.<br />

REHABILITATION PLANS<br />

IMPRESSARIO AGRUPADOS, an engineering consulting firm from Spain, conducted a<br />

major rehabilitation study in 1993 for EBRD. They evaluated seven alternatives for<br />

rehabilitation, including rebuilding boilers and replacing turbines with upgraded 225 MW<br />

machines, adding scrubbers, precipitators, replacing boilers with circulating fluidized bed<br />

(CFB) boilers, and gas turbine combined cycle repowering.<br />

The station is very interested in learning more about CFB technology as a solution to the<br />

problems resulting from poor coal - S02' NO x , and high maintenance on the old Taganrog<br />
