CHAPTER 4construction activities which resulted from favourable economic conditions <strong>and</strong> arelatively high population growth in Brisbane areas.A total <strong>of</strong> 362 000 teus <strong>of</strong> containerised exports was shipped out <strong>of</strong> Brisbane port in2004-05 (Figure 4.2 <strong>and</strong> Table 4.1). This is largely because <strong>of</strong> anincrease in dem<strong>and</strong> for export commodities in overseas markets, mainly Japan. Theoutlook for the Japanese economy is positive, <strong>and</strong> is expected to grow by 1.6 per cent ayear over the next twenty years.Asia, particularly Japan <strong>and</strong> China, will continue to remain major export destinations interms <strong>of</strong> total shipped tonnage. Although Brisbane Port presently accounts for only 3.4per cent <strong>of</strong> Australia’s total trade with the USA, the share is likely to increase with theimplementation <strong>of</strong> the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with USA in future.About 80.3 per cent <strong>of</strong> the total containerised imports to Brisbane Port are full containerimports <strong>and</strong> the remaining 19.7 per cent are empty container imports. The totalcontainerised imports to Brisbane Port increased by 10.7 per cent a year over the lastfive years to 364 000 teus in 2004-05, including full container imports increasing by13.0 per cent a year to 292 000 teus in 2004-05 <strong>and</strong> the empty container importsincreasing by 3.5 per cent a year to 72 000 in 2004-05.The outlook for the Australian economy <strong>and</strong> exchange rates suggests that the totalcontainerised imports will increase annually by 7.0 per cent during the forecast period to1.4 million teus in 2024-25. This includes an annual increase <strong>of</strong> 7.7 per cent in full31
