Introduction to the Second Symposium<strong>The</strong> second annual postal history symposium, sponsored by the <strong>Smithsonian</strong>National <strong>Postal</strong> Museum, the American Philatelic Society, and theAmerican Philatelic Research Library, was held in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania,at the American Philatelic Center on October 21–22, 2007. <strong>The</strong> themewas “Further, Farther, Faster: Transportation Technology and the Mail,” theexploration of how, through the application of new technologies for transportingthe mail, the post office and the transportation industry have encouraged,supported, and benefited from each other’s growth and development.<strong>The</strong> symposium featured scholars of a variety of postal and transportationtechnologies who presented nine papers, which explored the postaltransportationnexus in three moderated panels—Land, Sea, and Air. Cheryl R.Ganz, Philatelic Curator at the <strong>Smithsonian</strong> National <strong>Postal</strong> Museum, discusses“Air Transportation” in her paper “Zeppelin Posts at the 1933 Chicago World’sFair: Integrating Collector and Historian Methodologies.”
