EASTERN REGION (ÖST)Major efforts are being made to develop the twin towns of Linköpingand Norrköping into the fourth city region. Together with other townswithin commuting distance the region has a labour market area witha population of approximately 500,000. This initiative should beviewed in the light of the link which exists between growth and populationin a region. The large towns are Linköping,Norrköping and Örebro.MELLRINGELinköping has a strong rate of growth, closely followed by Norrköping.Linköping University, one of the larger universities in Sweden, has operations in the two towns and is a strong driving force forexpansion in both. Örebro, which in terms of size is comparable toLinköping and Norrköping, has a rate of growth that is almost on thesame level as these two. Örebro is part of the Mälardalen labour marketregion which, in line with improvements in the infrastructure, isbecoming increasingly intertwined with the Stockholm-Uppsalaregion.
