NMICS 2010, Mid- and Far Western RegionsThe resulting number of households from this exercise was 1,000 households, which is the samplesize needed in each subregion—thus yielding about 6,000 in total. The average number ofhouseholds selected per cluster for NMICS 2010 was determined as 25 households, based on anumber of considerations, including the design effect, intra-class correlation coefficient, the budgetavailable, and the time that would be needed per team to complete one cluster. Dividing the totalnumber of households by the number of sample households per cluster, it was calculated that 40sample clusters would need to be selected in each subregion.Equal allocation of the total sample size to the six subregions was used. Therefore, 40 clusters wereallocated to each subregion, with the final sample size calculated at 6,000 households (40 clusters *6 subregions * 25 sample households per cluster). In each subregion, the clusters (primary samplingunits) were distributed to urban and rural domains, proportional to the size of urban and ruralhouseholds in that subregion. Table SD.1 shows the allocation of clusters to the sampling strata.Table SD.1: Allocation of sample clusters (primary sampling units) to sampling strataRegionEcologicalzoneDistrict Pop Census 2001 NMICS 2010UrbanhouseholdsRuralhouseholdsNumber of clustersSample householdsUrban Rural Total Urban Rural TotalFar-Western Mountain Bajhura 20,378 - 12 12 - 300 300Bajhang 28,588 - 16 16 - 400 400Darchula 21,029 - 12 12 - 300 300Domain 1 Total 69,995 - 40 40 - 1,000 1,000Mid-Western Mountain Dolpa 5,812 - 4 4 - 100 100Karnali Jumla 15,850 - 12 12 - 300 300Kalikot 18,487 - 13 13 - 325 325Mugu 8,261 - 6 6 - 150 150Humla 6,953 - 5 5 - 125 125Domain 2 Total 55,363 - 40 40 - 1,000 1,000Far-Western Hills Achham 44,005 - 10 10 - 250 250Doti 4,203 32,262 4 7 11 100 175 275Dadeldhura 3,538 18,442 3 4 7 75 100 175Baitadi 3,481 36,906 3 9 12 75 225 300Domain 3 Total 11,222 131,615 10 30 40 250 750 1,000Mid-Western Hills Pyuthan 40,183 - 5 5 - 125 125Rolpa 38,512 - 5 5 - 125 125Rukum 33,501 - 4 4 - 100 100Salyan 38,084 - 4 4 - 100 100Surkhet 7,139 46,908 6 5 11 150 125 275Dailekh 3,854 37,286 4 4 8 100 100 200Jajarkot 24,147 - 3 3 - 75 75Domain 4 Total 10,993 258,621 10 30 40 250 750 1,000Far-Western Terai Kailali 18,025 76,405 9 16 25 225 400 625Kanchanpur 13,738 46,420 6 9 15 150 225 375Domain 5 Total 31,763 122,825 15 25 40 375 625 1,000Mid-Western Terai Dang 16,001 66,494 7 10 17 175 250 425Banke 10,592 56,677 5 8 13 125 200 325Bardiya 7,939 51,630 3 7 10 75 175 250Domain 6 Total 34,532 174,801 15 25 40 375 625 1,000Total households/clusters 88,510 813,220 50 190 240 1,250 4,750 6,000197
