The WFFC goal is to reduce deaths due to acuterespiratory infections by one third.Children with suspected pneumonia are those who have an illness with a cough accompanied byrapid or difficult breathing and whose symptoms are not due to a problem in the chest or a blockednose.The indicators used are as follows.Prevalence of suspected pneumoniaCare-seeking for suspected pneumoniaAntibiotic treatment for suspected pneumoniaKnowledge of the danger signs of pneumoniaTable CH.8 presents information on the prevalence of suspected pneumonia and, if care was soughtoutside the home, the site of care. Seven percent of children aged 0–59 months in the MFWR werereported to have had symptoms of pneumonia during the two weeks preceding the survey. Of these,51 percent were taken to an appropriate provider. About one third (32 percent) were taken to publicsector health institutions (hospital: nine percent, primary healthcare centre: seven percent, andhealth post/sub health post: 16 percent). Around six percent received treatment from a FemaleCommunity Health Volunteer. Some 34 percent received treatment from private hospitals, clinics orpharmacies. Home remedies were given to nine percent of children and two percent visited atraditional healer. There was little variation by background characteristic.68
