<strong>NMICS</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, Mid- and Far Western RegionsTo prevent maternal and neonatal tetanus, all pregnant women should receive at least two doses <strong>of</strong>the tetanus toxoid vaccine. However, if a woman does not receive two doses <strong>of</strong> the vaccine duringpregnancy, she (and her newborn) is also considered to be protected if the one <strong>of</strong> followingcircumstances applies.She has received at least two doses <strong>of</strong> tetanus toxoid vaccine, the last within the prior threeyearsShe has received at least three doses, the last within the prior five yearsShe has received at least four doses, the last within the prior 10 yearsShe has received at least five doses during her lifetimeTable CH.4 shows the tetanus protection status <strong>of</strong> women aged 15–49 years in the MFWR who had alive birth in the two years preceding the survey. Around two thirds (64 percent) were found to beprotected against neonatal tetanus. There was little variation by region or urban/rural area.Subregionally, the highest percentage was in the Far Western Hills (70 percent) and the lowest wasin the Mid-Western Mountains (57 percent). The likelihood <strong>of</strong> protection against neonatal tetanusincreased with a woman’s level <strong>of</strong> education and household wealth status. Only 54 percent <strong>of</strong>women with no education were protected compared to 79 percent <strong>of</strong> women with at leastsecondary education. Only 53 percent <strong>of</strong> women from the poorest quintile were protectedcompared to 76 percent <strong>of</strong> women in the richest quintile.58
