The WFFC goal is to reduce deaths due to acuterespiratory infections by one third.Children with suspected pneumonia are those who have an illness with a cough accompanied byrapid or difficult breathing and whose symptoms are not due to a problem in the chest or a blockednose.The indicators used are as follows.Prevalence <strong>of</strong> suspected pneumoniaCare-seeking for suspected pneumoniaAntibiotic treatment for suspected pneumoniaKnowledge <strong>of</strong> the danger signs <strong>of</strong> pneumoniaTable CH.8 presents information on the prevalence <strong>of</strong> suspected pneumonia and, if care was soughtoutside the home, the site <strong>of</strong> care. Seven percent <strong>of</strong> children aged 0–59 months in the MFWR werereported to have had symptoms <strong>of</strong> pneumonia during the two weeks preceding the survey. Of these,51 percent were taken to an appropriate provider. About one third (32 percent) were taken to publicsector health institutions (hospital: nine percent, primary healthcare centre: seven percent, andhealth post/sub health post: 16 percent). Around six percent received treatment from a FemaleCommunity Health Volunteer. Some 34 percent received treatment from private hospitals, clinics orpharmacies. Home remedies were given to nine percent <strong>of</strong> children and two percent visited atraditional healer. There was little variation by background characteristic.68
