9 COULOMB EXCITATION OF ISOMERIC STATES: PROGRAMPAWELThecodePAWELisamodification of GOSIA designed to h<strong>and</strong>le those special cases where a fraction ofthe Coulomb excited nuclei have as an initial state an excited isomeric state rather than the ground state.The only change to the st<strong>and</strong>ard GOSIA input is the addition of a first record after EXPT containing onenumber that is the abundance of the nuclei in the isomer state expressed in %. By convention the isomericstate must be level #2 in the LEVE setup. Otherwise there are no other changes to the st<strong>and</strong>ard GOSIAinput.The operation of PAWEL is similar to GOSIA. except that up to the stage of calculating statisticaltensors PAWEL performs two passes. For the first pass the initial conditions are set in such a way thatat -infinity the <strong>excitation</strong> amplitude is set to unity for state #1 <strong>and</strong> to zero for all other states. For thesecond pass state #1 is replaced by state #2. Then both solutions are merged according to the user-givenproportion between the ground <strong>and</strong> isomeric states.The de<strong>excitation</strong> part remains unchanged after mergingthe statistical tensors, so there is only one calculation. The same applies for the fast approximation.147
