2. METHODOLOGYThe study was c<strong>on</strong>ducted to assess the seed producti<strong>on</strong>, processing <strong>and</strong> storage scenario at farmers’level of three major cereal crops viz., rice, wheat <strong>and</strong> maize. The study locati<strong>on</strong>s were selected based <strong>on</strong>the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of major acreage <strong>and</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> of these crops according to the Bangladesh Bureauof Statistics (2008). The selected study locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>for</strong> rice were Rajshahi, Rangpur <strong>and</strong> Jessore districts;<strong>for</strong> wheat Rajshahi, Dinajpur <strong>and</strong> Rangpur; <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> maize Rajshahi, Dinajpur <strong>and</strong> Kishoreg<strong>on</strong>j. Threecategories of sample farmers viz., large (l<strong>and</strong> occupati<strong>on</strong> of 5.01 acres <strong>and</strong> above), medium (2.01-5.00acres) <strong>and</strong> small (0.51-2.00 acres) were r<strong>and</strong>omly selected <strong>for</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ducting in-depth study in this regard(Alam et al., 2003; Iqbal, 2007).2.1 Name of the crops <strong>for</strong> study: Three major cereal crops of Bangladesh namely rice, wheat <strong>and</strong>maize were c<strong>on</strong>sidered <strong>for</strong> the study.2.2 Sample size <strong>and</strong> Sampling method: A total of 1350 sample farmers were selected c<strong>on</strong>sisting 450<strong>for</strong> each of the three crops (rice, wheat <strong>and</strong> maize) by covering three locati<strong>on</strong>s/districts <strong>for</strong> each crops.Stratified r<strong>and</strong>om sampling method was followed <strong>for</strong> upazila <strong>and</strong> village selecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> then stratifiedr<strong>and</strong>om sampling method adopted <strong>for</strong> farmers’ selecti<strong>on</strong>. The meetings were heldto discuss different issues like site selecti<strong>on</strong>, enumerator selecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> training, work plan preparati<strong>on</strong>,questi<strong>on</strong>naire preparati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> survey, PRA/FGD, seminar presentati<strong>on</strong>, survey data analysis <strong>and</strong> reportwriting.2.4 Site visit <strong>and</strong> site selecti<strong>on</strong>: As per the research work plan finalized from programme planningmeeting, the `Site Selecti<strong>on</strong> Team` visited in all the five districts viz., Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Rangpur,Jessore <strong>and</strong> Kishoreg<strong>on</strong>j with the help of DAE pers<strong>on</strong>nel. One or two upazilas were r<strong>and</strong>omly selectedc<strong>on</strong>sidering the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of respective crops (rice, wheat <strong>and</strong> maize), socioec<strong>on</strong>omic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s,soils, l<strong>and</strong> type, cropping <strong>and</strong> communicati<strong>on</strong> facilities (Table 2.2 <strong>and</strong> Annex 1).
