Farmers also preferred new Indian cultivarSwarna due to its lodging tolerance, short durati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> moderate yield. Overall scoring by theparticipants showed that Prodip ranked 1 st followed by Bijoy (2 nd ), Swarna (3 rd ) <strong>and</strong> Shatabdi (4 th ).Four varieties of wheat were identified <strong>for</strong> cultivati<strong>on</strong> in Rangpur like Shatabdi, S<strong>on</strong>alika, Kanchan <strong>and</strong>Protiva. Matrix ranking of wheat varieties was d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> the basis of yield, taste <strong>and</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> cost(Table 4.2.10). Participants preferred S<strong>on</strong>alika variety most <strong>for</strong> its higher yield, good taste <strong>and</strong> lessproducti<strong>on</strong> cost. They opined that cultivati<strong>on</strong> of S<strong>on</strong>alika is possible even without irrigati<strong>on</strong>. S<strong>on</strong>alika isalso testy to eat. Overall scoring by the participants showed that S<strong>on</strong>alika ranked 1 st with a total scoreof 157. The sec<strong>on</strong>d highest point (117) was scored by Shatabdi followed by Protiva (110). These findings obtained from the wheatfarmers str<strong>on</strong>gly support that of Huda (2001), who reported that good seed al<strong>on</strong>e could maximize foodproducti<strong>on</strong> to the range of 20-25%.56
