498 PATRICIA KENNEDY GRIMSTEDThe last document dates from 24 February 1609, a week after the initialdocument in the Kornik volume. The Kornik volume begins chronologically with a document from 17February 1609, so that only this document overlaps with the final documentsof "X.F.-29." Like the preceding volumes, the Kornik book recordsoutgoing Crown chancery documents in the Ruthenian language for theUkrainian Right-Bank palatinates. However, in contrast to "X.F.-29" andto the first part of the subsequent volume "Q-15" (see below) in which judicialdecrees predominate, the Kornik volume largely contains privilegesand other inscriptions, together with only two judicial decrees. Rather thanservicing the Crown vice-chancellors and later chancellors Pstrokoriski andGembicki, both of whom were ecclesiastic, it was prepared for the layvice-chancellor Kryski. 41The numerically subsequent but chronologically partially overlappingvolume "Q-15" contains predominantly legal decrees from the main chanceryfor the years 1611-1613, 42 a continuation of those recorded in "X.F.-29." It, too, was prepared by the clerk Florian Oleshko. Its first sectioncontains documents from the chancery of Wawrzyniec Gembicki, and itsfinal section contains those from the chancery of Feliks Kryski, who waspromoted to main chancellor following Gembicki in 1613.Next come two chronologically overlapping additional volumes from thechancery of Kryski, both by scribes who had prepared earlier volumes."R-16" is a direct continuation of the Kornik volume, with documents forthe years 1613-1617, predominantly privileges and chancery inscriptions, prepared by Jan Marcinkiewicz, who served as pysar for most of the Kornikvolume. 43 "S-17" continues the production of Florian Oleshko withpredominantly decrees from the Sejm court for the years 1613-1620. 44From this analysis of the chronology of documents included, and of theclerks or scribes and the chancellors or vice-chancellors responsible for theextant volumes of the Ruthenian series, it is clear that the Kornik volumefills a gap in the series, both from the standpoint of documents containedand in view of the responsible scribes and chancellors.41During this period, Crown chancellors and vice-chancellors alternated between ecclesiasticand lay persons. Traditionally, a chancellor always started as vice-chancellor. When anecclesiastic serving as vice-chancellor was promoted to chancellor, a lay person would beappointed as the new vice-chancellor and vice-versa.42Now TsGADA, fond 389, no. 205 (MK 322; earlier signature "15-Q").43TsGADA, fond 389, no. 206 (MK 323; earlier signature "16-R").44TsGADA, fond 389, no. 207 (MK 324; earlier signature "17-S").
