THE SACK OF KIEV OF 1169 305Oleksa Dvorskyj, Sbyslav Ziroslavic,Ivanko Tvorimiric and Rod, his steward,and many others, while[Mstislav] and his brother Jaroslavjoined together beyond the Unova andboth went to Volodymyr[-Volyns'kyj].And so Kiev was taken on March the8th [12th] in the second week of Lent,on Wednesday. And for two days theyplundered the entire city, both thePodol and the Hill, and themonasteries, and the [churches of] St.Sophia and the Mother of God,[namely] the Tithe [Church]. Andmercy came from nowhere to no one,while the churches were burning andthe Christians were being killed, theothers being bound, the women beingtaken into captivity, separated by forcefrom their husbands. The childrenwere crying, seeing their mothers beingtaken away. And a multitude of propertywas taken, and churches werestripped of icons, and of books, and ofchasubles, and all [church] bells weretaken away by the Smolenians, Suzdalians,and Cernihovians, and Oleg's retinue.And all the shrines were taken.And the Monastery of the Caves of theHoly Mother of God was set on fire bythe heathens, but was saved by Godfrom such disaster, because of theprayers of the Blessed Mother of God.And moaning and suffering, and unconsoledsorrow, and unending tears befellall the people of Kiev. And all thishappened because of our sins.aforesaid. Mstislav Andrejevic installedhis uncle Gleb in Kiev, andreturned to Volodymyr[-Volyns'kyj],together with his retinue. In the year1169, Mstislav Andrejevic installed hisuncle Gleb in Kiev, and he himselfreturned to Vladimir. And Gleb gavePerejaslav to his son.The beginnings of the princely rule ofGleb in KievMstislav Andrejevic installed his uncleGISb on the throne in Kiev on Marchthe 8th [12th]. Gleb gave Perejaslav tohis son Volodimer, and MstislavAndrejevic went to Suzdal' to his fatherAndrej with great honor and fame.
