528 STEFAN KIENIEWICZIt is small wonder, then, that this volume sparks the strong interest of a Polishhistorian. It arouses his reflection, but also his objections. Ivan L. Rudnytsky, as heappears in his writings, was an extraordinary individual with a creative mind andhonest character. He combined the love of his own oppressed nation with anAmerican-bred faith in the enduring values of liberalism, democracy, and self-rule.He rejected everything that he suspected of arbitrariness, centralism, or totalitarianism, even if he observed them among his own countrymen. In this spirit he reflectedupon the history of the Ukraine not only as a historian, but also as a moralist. Herendered important service to the Ukrainian cause on American soil. Reading theseessays provides material for reflection also to Poles, in some ways particularly toPoles. Above all I have in mind the problem of the partial Polish responsibility forthe disasters the Ukrainian nation suffered, albeit not at Polish hands.Institute of History, Warsaw University
