Frankly, I am amazed at <strong>the</strong> work that <strong>the</strong> studentshave done. Also, we have been fortunate to have <strong>the</strong> full support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Military and Veterans Law Section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> and <strong>the</strong> MLAP.”With respect to <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> this clinic, attached is an article to befeatured in June’s emorywire (Exhibit D) and guidelines and <strong>as</strong>ummary about <strong>the</strong> Emory program (Exhibit E).Plans are also moving forward to establish similar programs at <strong>the</strong> fouro<strong>the</strong>r law schools in <strong>Georgia</strong>.5) Along with <strong>the</strong> Military and Veterans Law Section, <strong>as</strong>sisted wi<strong>the</strong>stablishment <strong>of</strong> a legal <strong>as</strong>sistance clinic in Augusta at <strong>the</strong> VAMedical Center comparable to that which h<strong>as</strong> been operating for manyyears under <strong>the</strong> leadership <strong>of</strong> Cary King at <strong>the</strong> VA Medical Center inDecatur, <strong>Georgia</strong>. The Augusta <strong>Bar</strong> Association is in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong>recruiting lawyers to provide direct legal <strong>as</strong>sistance or to refer mattersto o<strong>the</strong>r lawyers who can <strong>as</strong>sist in various are<strong>as</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law.6) Challenge Coin. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> Military and Veterans LawSection, <strong>as</strong>sisted with creation <strong>of</strong> a “challenge coin”. Inspired, in part,by <strong>the</strong> initiative <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> President Robin Clark, <strong>the</strong> MLAP and <strong>the</strong>Law Section reviewed several possible designs for its coin and selected<strong>the</strong> one shown on page 27 <strong>of</strong> Exhibit F). About this coin and itsmerits, John Camp, chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Military and Veterans Law Sectionrecently said, “challenge coins commemorate significant advancementin <strong>the</strong> Section’s activities, carry special meaning, and are valued farmore than cuff links, personalized pens, or a (c<strong>of</strong>fee) gift card. . . Theycarry a message about our Section’s and <strong>the</strong> MLAP’s purpose and whatis our mission. We “Honor <strong>the</strong> Military” and we “Serve Those WhoHave Served” by raising <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> Military andVeterans Law and delivering legal <strong>as</strong>sistance to our Service Membersand Veterans who would o<strong>the</strong>rwise be unable to find legal <strong>as</strong>sistance.”C<strong>as</strong>es Processed. Below is a summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> number and types <strong>of</strong> legal<strong>as</strong>sistance c<strong>as</strong>es thus far received and referred to lawyers under <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Bar</strong>’sMilitary Legal Assistance Program. Under <strong>the</strong> program, including <strong>the</strong> c<strong>as</strong>esprocessed prior to its formal inception in 2009, a total <strong>of</strong> 1,008 c<strong>as</strong>es havebeen processed. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, a total <strong>of</strong> 21 additional c<strong>as</strong>es are in process (i.e., in<strong>the</strong> pipeline), awaiting agreement authorizations from potential clients (14) oragreements from attorneys (7) to accept a c<strong>as</strong>e.
