With properencouragement and future training from <strong>the</strong> Section <strong>the</strong>y can deliverlegal <strong>as</strong>sistance to veterans and military members for <strong>the</strong> next 40years. The Section hopes to expand <strong>the</strong> Veterans Law Clinic model too<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Georgia</strong> law schools around <strong>the</strong> state.- The Section partnering with <strong>the</strong> MLAP and <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Regional Office<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Veterans Administration h<strong>as</strong> continued to expand <strong>the</strong> VeteransLegal Assistance Clinic currently at <strong>the</strong> VA Medical Center in Decaturto o<strong>the</strong>r major concentrations <strong>of</strong> veterans. The Section found awilling partner in <strong>the</strong> Augusta <strong>Bar</strong> Association, who under <strong>the</strong>leadership <strong>of</strong> Ed Coleman will be starting a clinic at <strong>the</strong> VA MedicalCenter in Augusta. A larger concentration <strong>of</strong> Wounded Warriors cyclethrough Augusta, and it is an excellent opportunity for helping veteransand service members with <strong>the</strong> most significant war related injuries. Intime and with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> law students and local volunteer attorneys,<strong>the</strong> Section hopes to open a clinic at <strong>the</strong> VA Medical Center in Dublinand at some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger VA Clinics in <strong>the</strong> major military communitiesaround <strong>the</strong> state.- Our partnership with <strong>the</strong> Veterans Administration and especially ourliaison with <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Regional General Counsel’s Office h<strong>as</strong> providedgreat dividends for <strong>the</strong> Section and our common goal <strong>of</strong> legal outreachto Veterans in <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong>. An example <strong>of</strong> our close cooperation occurredin December 2012 when <strong>the</strong> Section and <strong>the</strong> Decatur VA MedicalCenter entered into a Memorandum <strong>of</strong> Understanding for <strong>the</strong> support<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Veterans Legal Clinic at <strong>the</strong> hospital. It w<strong>as</strong> a historic occ<strong>as</strong>ionfor both <strong>the</strong> VA and <strong>the</strong> Section on improving <strong>the</strong> delivery and outreachto Veterans in need <strong>of</strong> personal legal <strong>as</strong>sistance.- The Executive Committee also continues to pursue expansion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>CLE opportunities for military law training especially in MilitaryFamily Law; Consumer Protection for Military Families especially in<strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> predatory lending practices; Service members Civil ReliefAct (SCRA); Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment RightsAct (USERRA); Military Justice; Practice before <strong>the</strong> Military <strong>Board</strong>s <strong>of</strong>Corrections <strong>of</strong> Military Records; and, <strong>the</strong> Legal Assistance Programsavailable through <strong>the</strong> Staff Judge Advocates’ Offices around <strong>the</strong> state.- Under <strong>the</strong> aegis <strong>of</strong> Lynn Adam, <strong>the</strong> Section provided significant draftlegislation to provide for <strong>the</strong> uniform development andimplementation <strong>of</strong> a Veterans Court program for participating Circuitswithin <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong>. This effort will leverage <strong>of</strong>f existing programs alreadyin place and is ano<strong>the</strong>r way to provide for diversion through o<strong>the</strong>rwiseoverburdened courts.
