Intr<strong>as</strong>tate Moot Court CompetitionCo-Chairs: Kathleen Sullivan Dod & Emelia WalkerThe YLD Intr<strong>as</strong>tate Moot Court Committee is happy to announce that its 2013 Moot Court Competitionw<strong>as</strong> a great success. This year’s competition took place on April 5-6 at Mercer University School <strong>of</strong> Law.The University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Law won titles for Best Team, Best Brief and Best Oralist. Thecommittee would like to <strong>of</strong>fer a special thank you to <strong>the</strong> multitude <strong>of</strong> practicing attorneys who helped tomake this year’s competition a success.Judicial Law ClerkCo-Chairs: Margaret Head & Elise MyersThe Judicial Law Clerk Committee continues to serve <strong>the</strong> public and <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession by hosting networkingevents that encourage members to give back to <strong>the</strong> community. The Committee organized, and Lister &Holt, LLC sponsored, a food drive for <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Community Food Bank. The Committee toge<strong>the</strong>r withLister & Holt collected over 135 pounds <strong>of</strong> food in addition to monetary donations. The event w<strong>as</strong> held atYard House and provided young lawyers an opportunity to network and help individuals in need.Earlier this year <strong>the</strong> Committee hosted a coat drive and provided dozens <strong>of</strong> items <strong>of</strong> clothing to <strong>the</strong>Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency. The coat drive w<strong>as</strong> sponsored by Gordon Biersch in Buckhead andHuff, Powell & Bailey, LLC. The Committee received a certificate <strong>of</strong> appreciation for <strong>the</strong>ir efforts from<strong>the</strong> organization One Warm Coat.Additionally this year, <strong>the</strong> Committee created a message board and helped connect law clerks to serve<strong>as</strong> resources to each o<strong>the</strong>r through a law clerk listserv and networking events. The Committee will beending <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> year with a Braves game to celebrate <strong>the</strong> committee’s successes. The event will be opento Committee members and we are looking forward to a relaxing evening <strong>of</strong> fun.Juvenile LawCo-Chairs: Crystal Conway & Stephanie M<strong>as</strong>onThe Juvenile Law Committee is wrapping up its year after several successful meetings featuring ChiefJudge Steven Teske <strong>of</strong> Clayton County Juvenile Court and Sharon Hill, Executive Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>Appleseed who both lauded <strong>the</strong> committee for its commitment to <strong>the</strong> p<strong>as</strong>sage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new juvenile code.House Bill 242 w<strong>as</strong> successfully p<strong>as</strong>sed this year, and <strong>the</strong> JLC in conjunction with Just <strong>Georgia</strong> hosted acelebration event on May 13. The next annual event, <strong>the</strong> Celebration <strong>of</strong> Excellence is in <strong>the</strong> finalplanning stages and will be held on June 26.Labor & Employment LawCo-Chairs: Joseph Sullivan & Rachael ZichellaThe Labor and Employment Committee had an incredibly productive spring. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Committee’smain goals is incre<strong>as</strong>ing positive interaction between <strong>the</strong> Plaintiff’s <strong>Bar</strong> and Defense <strong>Bar</strong> to create l<strong>as</strong>tingpr<strong>of</strong>essional friendships that will improve <strong>the</strong> L&E <strong>Bar</strong> <strong>as</strong> a whole and help us all to better serve ourclients. As part <strong>of</strong> this endeavor, <strong>the</strong> Committee launched its “Lunch with an Adversary” program,w<strong>here</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Plaintiff’s <strong>Bar</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Defense <strong>Bar</strong> meet for lunch. The Committee alsodeveloped a LinkedIn group page for members to communicate regarding a number <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionaltopics, including new legal developments.The Committee continued its popular series <strong>of</strong> monthly lunch meetings at which Labor & Employmentexperts present to members about emerging legal topics and o<strong>the</strong>r pr<strong>of</strong>essional considerations such <strong>as</strong>practice development and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism. In January, Ford & Harrison LLP partner Jeff Mokot<strong>of</strong>f spokeabout <strong>the</strong> new <strong>Georgia</strong> Restrictive Covenants Act; in February, Alicia Starkman, a Senior Associate atAlston & Bird LLP spoke about, “Transgender Discrimination and <strong>the</strong> Eleventh Circuit’s related opinion:Glenn v. Brumby”; in March, Troutman Sanders LLP partner Steve Riddell led <strong>the</strong> group in an engagingdiscussion regarding, “What Young Lawyers Can Do to Advance Their Careers and Develop Their91
