The <strong>of</strong>ficials indicatedthat <strong>the</strong> crowd in attendance w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> biggest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir road show events.The second event w<strong>as</strong> a Trademark Committee event held on December 5, 2012.The speaker w<strong>as</strong> Mary Denison, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office DeputyCommissioner for Trademark Operations. Topics covered included Trademark Officestatistics for <strong>the</strong> year, new post-registration procedures, fees, an upcoming revision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>TMEP, transitioning to an electronic Official Gazette, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r informationrelating to Trademark Office operations.The third event is our final event <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year, which will be held on June 12, 2013.This event will feature Lynne Beresford, former Commissioner for Trademarks at <strong>the</strong>U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, speaking on <strong>the</strong> topic “The Madrid Protocol – WhatDoes it Offer?” As Commissioner for Trademarks from 2005 through 2010, Ms.Beresford w<strong>as</strong> instrumental in <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Madrid Protocol in <strong>the</strong> United<strong>State</strong>s, helping to negotiate <strong>the</strong> regulations for <strong>the</strong> Protocol at WIPO. She w<strong>as</strong> also part <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> team that automated <strong>the</strong> filing and examination <strong>of</strong> international applications. She nowserves <strong>as</strong> a consultant to <strong>the</strong> World Intellectual Property Organization.INTRODUCTION OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY BOOT CAMP:As I mentioned in <strong>the</strong> Executive Summary, while serving <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> PatentCommittee, Brad Gr<strong>of</strong>f, <strong>the</strong> Trademark Committee Chair at <strong>the</strong> time and I held a BootCamp focused on intellectual property b<strong>as</strong>ic. It w<strong>as</strong> an experiment. We hosted a six-hourevent, primarily targeted towards new attorneys. It w<strong>as</strong> well received, but w<strong>as</strong> notrepeated. As one <strong>of</strong> my goals w<strong>as</strong> to provide practical training to new attorneys, I decided<strong>the</strong> Section should introduce a formal Boot Camp this year.One <strong>of</strong> my o<strong>the</strong>r goals <strong>as</strong> Chair w<strong>as</strong> to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> relationship between both<strong>the</strong> local law schools and universities. <strong>Georgia</strong> Tech w<strong>as</strong> <strong>of</strong> particular interest to mebecause it is both my alma mater and <strong>the</strong> technology hub <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. For <strong>the</strong> technical“hub” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city and its intellectual property community to collaborate is imperative inmy opinion. Hosting <strong>the</strong> Boot Camp at <strong>Georgia</strong> Tech w<strong>as</strong> intended to bridge <strong>the</strong> gap246
